How to Fix the Public WiFi Problem in MacOS 10.14 Mojave

If you are using MacOS 10.14 Mojave, you may have a problem connecting to public WiFi hotspots like your local coffee shop.  Normally, a pop-up window will appear, allowing you to enter credentials or agree to a lengthy Terms of Service you’ll never read.  However, as of the writing of this post, MacOS 10.14.1 is throwing you the following error instead of allowing you to log in:

WiFi Error!
Ugh.

The first time I saw this, I thought it was a problem with the WiFi at the bookstore I was at.  However, the problem persists no matter what public WiFi hotspot I try to connect to.

To get around this error message, go to http://captive.apple.com/hotspot-detect.html in Safari (This does not work in Chrome or Firefox):

http://captive.apple.com/hotspot-detect.html

You may have to hit enter a couple of times because Safari will still try and connect using the pop-up window, but just click ok on the error message again and the main browsing window will soon display the login screen you’ve been looking for.  Then you can proceed as usual and get connected.

Hopefully Apple will fix this problem soon, making this blog post irrelevant!

Let me know if it worked for you in the comments!
